Claiming a 285-horsepower rating, the 2021 Jeep Gladiator’s V-6 engine block is backed up by the proprietary Pentastar technology. Running on unleaded gasoline, the 3.6-L engine pumps out 260 pound-feet of torque. When synced with an eight-speed automatic transmission, the six-cylinder propulsion system supports a trailering load of up to 7,650 pounds per SAE J2807 criteria. Engineered to run on gas, the 2021 Chevrolet Colorado’s 2.5-L engine can’t produce more than 200 hp and 191 lb-ft. Having a towing rating of only 3,500 pounds, this I-4 powertrain uses direct fuel injection and variable valve timing for combustion. However, this light-duty Chevy pickup truck offers the 2.8-L Duramax engine that cranks 369 lb-ft at 2,000 RPM. Burning diesel fuel, this turbocharged, inline-four powerhouse delivers up to 181 hp. When equipped with this diesel-turbo engine, the Colorado model can tow a 7,700-pound trailer. Powered by diesel, the 2021 Gladiator’s 3.0-L EcoDiesel engine unleashes an astonishing 442 lb-ft.
Off-Road Capabilities
Capable of creating 50/50 torque splits between the front and rear wheels, the Command-Trac 4×4 drive is available on the 2021 Jeep Gladiator. This patented drivetrain is designed to operate smoothly on unpaved trails at speeds of up to 45 mph. Integrating an active transfer case, the Selec-Trac 4WD system provides enhanced off-road performance. With a boost from the Smart Lock function, this full-time 4×4 drive system provides continuous traction to wheels that need extra stability. Optimized for negotiating rocky trails at a steady pace, the Rock-Trac 4WD system delivers best-in-class handling off the road. A full-time version of the Rock-Trac drivetrain is also available for even better trekking. You simply will not find such advanced drivetrain options on the 2021 Chevy Colorado, which offers a 4×4 drive system with a two-speed transfer case. However, this light-duty pickup truck is available with fully locking front and rear differentials with manual controls. You may also add the Off-Road Rocker Protection and Off-Road Suspension to this Chevy pickup truck. Similarly, the Trail Rated Jeep truck offers the Tru-Lok differentials with locking mechanisms and the front sway bar that may be manually connected and disconnected.
